Solomon vs Books (What is your take?)

It has been said and it has always been implied that to be a good minister/leader someone must be well read. How does that gee & haw with what Solomon said under the direction of the Holy Spirit;

The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shephard. My son beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, with every secret thing whether good or evil.
Ecclesiastes 12:10-14 (ESV)

  1. As a "book-guy," I will say that Solomon is right... there is no end of books and they can certainly weary you. I think the key is to stay balanced and above all, stay Biblical (ie- build your life and ministry on the WORD). Book are like teachers... very good and helpful, as long as they stay true to Scripture as they are.

  2. I agree Noah, for me personally the problem is when I rely on books to teach me the Bible, instead of using the Bible to recomend the books. How is Illinois?

  3. Hey GW, our church plant in the mountains of California has seen 35 a Sunday, but this a.m. we were "down" to 7! Your comment to Ed Stetzer gave some encouragement after the let down! Thanks and may the Lord bless your ministry.
